Unlike most of the books in the "Cultural Dimensions" series I have hesitated to publish this one because of the potentially dangerous conditions that prevail at this time (late 2011) in Sri Lanka; however, there is so much to recommend this island nation for expat living, and so many expats do manage to live safely and successfully in Sri Lanka in spite of the dangers - which we all hope are passing - that I've decided to go ahead with the publication of "Cultural Dimensions of Expatriate Life in Sri Lanka."
In acknowledgement of the need for anyone living as an expat in Sri Lanka to practice vigilant personal and family security I have appended an essay "Personal and Family Security in a Chaotic World" as Appendix Four. I hope and trust that this will not create an over-emphasis on the potential problems of living and working in this beautiful and, for the most part, welcoming country.
Sri Lanka -- the Ceylon of old -- is a beautiful island paradise. The frangipangi and bougainvillea bushes in Colombo's posh Cinnamon Gardens neighborhood drape a profusion of flowers onto the roads. Fresh breezes blow from the ocean cooling the city; the weather is humid and warm, but rarely oppressive. Traveler after traveler has praised Ceylon, Serendib, Sri Lanka for its beauty, gentility and charm. One of the first on record ...
"On leaving the Island of Andoman and sailing a thousand miles, a little south of west, the traveler reaches Ceylon, which is undoubtedly the finest island of its size in all the world."
(Marco Polo)
Of all the lovely places in the world that I have lived and worked in and simply visited, Sri Lanka with its tropical palm-fringed beaches, its remote jungles, its temples and buried cities, is surely among the loveliest. Although the physical beauty of this island and the warmth and generosity of its people are compromised these days by a repressive government and corrupt, often violent police and military, it is nevertheless a place where a thoughtful, careful expatriate can live in comfort and relative safety.
In this book I won't dwell on the dark side of life here - although I won't ignore it either. But for the most part I'll attempt to show the prospective sojourner/expat the many aspects of Sri Lankan life that make up the overwhelmingly attractive way of life that this island nation offers.
